Position : Occupational Therapist/Hand Therapist

Location: Fredericksburg, VA or willing to relocate in VA

Salary: Negotiable

Duration: Fulltime

This position is accountable to provide therapy services to patients, including assessment, treatment, program planning and implementation, related documentation, communication with other disciplines and services, and staff supervision as agreed. Staff cares for all age groups from infants to elderly and is aware of the developmental needs over the age span and the appropriate equipment for all ages. This position must demonstrate a commitment of quality service to our patients, the public and our co-workers.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities (include percentage of time spent on each):
Competency in specialization in hand and upper extremity diagnosis and protocols.
Competency with advanced splinting techniques.
Meeting continuing education of hours as specific to ASHT.
An Occupational or Physical Therapist who through advanced study specialized in rehabilitation patients with conditions affecting the hands and upper extremities.
The high degree of specialization requires continuing education and advanced certification.
Hand Therapists work with patients:
a. who may have been affected by birth defects, an accident, post-surgical complications or
trauma leaving them with wounds, scars, burns, injured tendons, or nerves, fractures or
even amputation of the fingers, hands or arms
b. disabled from the affects of repetitive motion disorders
c. chronic problems such as Arthritis or a neurological condition
7. Provides a continuum of care starting within days of the injury or surgery right through
to the patient's return to work and/or a productive lifestyle.
8. Evaluate and identify any problem relative to the upper extremities.
9. Effectively treat and rehabilitate the patient through such methods as postoperative
rehabilitation, rehabilitation or industry consultation.
10. Postoperative Rehabilitation:
a. management of open or sutured wounds
b. control of hypertrophic or hyper sensitive scars
c. reduction of swelling
d. splinting as appropriate

11. Rehabilitation
a. management of acute or chronic pain
b. desensitization following nerve injury or trauma
c. sensory re-education after nerve injury
d. design and implementation of exercise programs to increase motion, dexterity and/or
strength
e. splint fabrication for prevention or corrections of injury
f. training in the performance of daily life skills through adapted methods and equipment
g. conditioning prior to returning to work
12. Industry Consultation
a. consult with various industries establishing preventive programs for workers with
cumulative trauma disorders.
b. recommend modification of work stations and alternative work methods to help
ensure healthy work styles of all employees.
Other Functions:
Qualifications:
Bachelor degree from an accredited Physical/Occupational Therapy program required; Masters preferred.
Practicing in their respective field (OT/PT) for 5 years.
Documented having completed 2000 + hours working with Hand patients.
Passed the Hand Therapy Exam, equaling eligibility for certification.
