Job Status:Full Time Education:Professional

MSUCOM Division of General Internal Medicine is seeking two general internal medicine physicians interested in teaching and quality patient care. The division is currently comprised of four enthusiastic internists, and the division plans to expand to include several more faculty members over the next few years. The Division's mission includes the promotion of general internal medicine as a career by increasing the exposure of medical students and residents to primary care internists in their roles as clinicians and educators. Interest and/or experience in clinical research is not required for this position, although there are opportunities to pursue scholaraly activity and these activities are encouraged.

The division is responsible for supervising the internal medicine resident clinic at Ingham Regional Medical Center, a 450 bed tertiary care teaching hospital with approximately 15 internal medicine residents. Faculty members will see clinic patients 4-5 half days each week and will act as full covering partners within the division. Every 5-6 weeks, clinicians will act as attending physician on the inpatient teaching service. The service generally has 1-3 students, interns, or residents on rotation, and the census runs 20-30 patients. Resident physicians admit patients during the night hours following telephone conference with the on-call attending.

In July 2006, the Division of General Internal Medicine will launch a new Osteopathic Internal Medicine Residency Program at neighboring Sparrow Hospital. Educational activities will shift towards that institution and the division is actively promoting the creation of a city-wide dually certified internal medicine program in the mid-Michigan area.

Because the mission of the division stresses education, the successful applicant will need to have proficient teaching skills and a genuine interest in education. A large portion of the teaching will take place on inpatient rounds and while supervising residents in their ambulatory clinic. In addition, faculty will attend morning reports and resident journal clubs and will present formal lectures to house staff and medical students. Faculty will help to develop new curricular experiences for trainees.

This is an exciting position that allows the faculty member to enjoy a diverse combination of experiences on the job. The current division members are looking for new faculty who will share in the fun.
