Requires current AZ RN license or other compact state RN license. Current acute care experience is strongly preferred, however, new graduates will be considered on an individual basis. Must possess highly developed interpersonal skills and demonstrate behaviors consistent with those identified as the hospital's service standards.
This position serves as base unit staff for the Cardiovascular ICU. Incumbents will use specialized knowledge, judgment and nursing skills based upon the principles of biological, physical and social sciences to facilitate patient's achievement of optimum health status. Provides leadership and coordination to the healthcare team and will maintain standards of professional skills.
This Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit specializes in the most common surgery to the unit – the coronary artery bypass. Valve replacements, vascular and thoracic surgeries also make up our patient population. We also recover patients who have had the new mid-cab or “off-pump” bypass procedures. CVICU is generally a non-teach unit, although surgical house staff will manage the care of the vascular patients and there is overflow from the CCU Unit that utilizes house staff also. CVICU focuses on quality care of these critically ill patients and their families. Acuity ranges from moderate to high, based upon the patient population.
Number of beds:
Nine beds – all private rooms with one isolation room on each unit.
RN’s: all 12 hour shifts of 7a-7:30p and 7p-7:30a.
Staff work every third weekend and utilize self-scheduling.
Each nurse is responsible for delivering total patient care to his/her assigned patient(s) to maintain a high professional standard. The licensed professional is also responsible for directing the activities of the non-licensed caregivers. Clinical pathways and case management enhance the management of all surgical cardiovascular patients. Peer support and mutual respect represent the philosophical core enabling consistent quality care.

The CVICU is a progressive, dynamic unit in which to practice nursing. Our medical center is a cardiac referral site, and we receive patients from all over the state who need cardiovascular surgery. We are one of the largest programs in the state with excellent patient outcomes, which reflect the quality of physicians and nurses that we attract. The autonomy that a CVICU nurse has is what attracts most of our professionals to this unit. With a specialized knowledge base about cardiac surgery, one can touch on every system of the human body as every system is affected by this surgery. Strong assessment skills and autonomy to act in the best interest of the patient are what offers exciting and rewarding careers in this cardiovascular unit for the motivated professional.
