Requires current AZ RN license or other compact state RN license. One year of Critical Care experience is preferred, however, new graduates will be considered on an individual basis. Must possess highly developed interpersonal skills and demonstrate behaviors consistent with those identified as the hospital's service standards.
These positions serve as base unit staff for the Intensive Care Unit. Incumbents will use specialized knowledge, judgment and nursing skills based upon the principles of biological, physical and social sciences to facilitate patient's achievement of optimum health status. Provides leadership and coordination to the healthcare team and will maintain standards of professional skills.
This ICU is the hospital’s most recent addition to the critical care service. The newly completed unit is equipped with the most technologically advanced monitors, bedside equipment and environmental air handling systems available. These units serve a diverse medical and surgical patient population that includes liver, renal and renal pancreas transplants, high risk obstetrics, toxicology overflow and multi-system organ failure patients. Patient and family care is coordinated by a professional nursing staff to meet the demands of the critically ill. Nurses provide total care for 1-2 patients and coordinate care with physicians and related ancillary personnel. Enrichment and support allow the staff to cope with the heavy physical and emotional demands of the patients and family.
Number of beds:
Pod shaped units with 8-9 beds each.
12-hour shifts are available with flexibility incorporated to fit the nurse’s needs– 7a-7:30p and 7p-7:30a. Working three 12 hour shifts per week provides 36 hours which is considered full-time with full-time benefits. Self scheduling is done one month at a time with high priority given to requests off. All employees work every third weekend.
The philosophy of this unit focuses on the patient and family, continually striving for quality care for the family as a unit. This philosophy cannot only provide continuing challenges to the nurses skill, but can provide personal rewards when the complexities of care have been managed.
Exciting transitions to a Professional Practice Model including shared governance are underway. Each professional nurse has autonomy and accountability for patient care. The nurse plans and executes the teaching, ongoing evaluation and changes necessary to attain a practical and optimal transition out of ICU for each patient. Advanced degrees, certifications, and professional development are encouraged and rewarded. Management’s philosophy is to support the nursing staff in any way necessary to provide exceptional patient care.
Unique features of the unit:
A variety of support services are available for both the nursing staff and the patients. Social Workers and Case Managers are assigned to each patient to assist with the plan provided for the ICU patients and families. The unit based Clinical Nurse Specialist, Educator and Palliative Care Nurse are additional resources available for the ICU RN. ICU intensivists, hospitalists, attending physicians and medical teaching staff work in a collegial fashion with the nursing staff to provide optimal patient care.
