Requires current AZ RN license or other compact state RN license. One year of General Med/Surg experience is strongly preferred, however, new graduates will be considered on an individual basis. Must possess highly developed interpersonal skills and demonstrate behaviors consistent with those identified as the hospital's service standards.
These positions serve as base unit staff for the General Med/Surg Units. Incumbents will use specialized knowledge, judgment and nursing skills based upon the principles of biological, physical and social sciences to facilitate patient's achievement of optimum health status. Provides leadership and coordination to the healthcare team and will maintain standards of professional skills.
This Unit is a 60 bed general surgery-teaching unit providing an interdisciplinary approach to quality patient care. In addition to the nursing staff, the Patient Care Team includes physicians, case managers, social workers and other disciplines as required. Nursing care is provided for inpatient adolescent, adult and geriatric patients requiring major or minor surgical intervention. Patient/family teaching is very important and is one of the primary focuses of our unit. A high percentage of our patients have medical problems as well as their surgical procedure, therefore a nurse on our unit will get a broad medical/surgical background.
Number of beds:
Four pods with 15 beds each
RN’s: all 12 hour shifts of 7a-7:30p and 7p-7:30a, 36 hour work week
Self scheduling model is used
A modified total patient care concept provides the nurse the opportunity for close interaction with his/her patients while at the same time having support personnel available on the unit. The RN coordinates and communicates patient care needs with other members of the patient care team. All staff members are considered valuable members of the team.

Continuing education is supported and encouraged. A monthly education calendar, provided by our clinical nursing educator, reflects general and specialty educational opportunities. The facility has an extensive residency program for physicians, including a surgical residency. The teaching environment provides a wide range of educational opportunities for nurses.
The unit has a Quality council, which is made up of unit staff members, and makes many of the decisions for the operations of the unit.
