Requires current AZ RN license or other compact state RN license. One year of Oncology / Hematology experience is required. Must possess highly developed interpersonal skills and demonstrate behaviors consistent with those identified as the hospital's service standards.
These positions serve as base unit staff for the Oncology / Hematology / Bone Marrow Transplant Unit. Incumbents will use specialized knowledge, judgment and nursing skills based upon the principles of biological, physical and social sciences to facilitate patient's achievement of optimum health status. Provides leadership and coordination to the healthcare team and will maintain standards of professional skills.
This unit is within the medical teaching service. The adult patient population has disease processes ranging from solid tumors, to a variety of malignant and non-malignant hematology abnormalities, as well as an array of complex medical complications. Patients admitted to the unit may require chemo-therapeutic drugs or radiation oncology for treatment of the primary disease, or may require treatment for complications of their disease, such as pain, nausea, hypercalcemia or an infective process.
The Bone Marrow Transplant Program provides both inpatient and outpatient care in a specially constructed unit. This is a state-of-the-art unit providing the latest research based treatment modalities. This highly successful program is currently expanding the inpatient beds and doubling the size of the outpatient clinic area.
Number of beds:
Oncology/Hematology – two pods each with 15 beds
Bone Marrow Transplant – currently 7 inpatient beds (expanding to 13), with 5 current outpatient stations
12-hour shifts are available with flexibility incorporated to fit the nurse’s needs– 7a-7:30p and 7p-7:30a. Working three 12 hour shifts per week provides 36 hours which is considered full-time with full-time benefits. Self scheduling is done one month at a time with high priority given to requests off. All employees have every other weekend off.
Exciting transitions to a Professional Practice Model including shared governance are underway. Each professional nurse has autonomy and accountability for patient care.
The philosophy of this unit focuses on the patient and family, continually striving for quality care for the family as a unit. This philosophy cannot only provide continuing challenges to the nurse’s skill, but can provide personal rewards when the complexities of care have been managed.
Unique features of the unit:
A variety of support services are available for both the nursing staff and the patients. A Social Worker and home care department is available for assistance in discharge planning. The Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist provides expert clinical and educational consultative assistance for the complex oncology patient in addition to Clinical Case Managers who assist with the plan of care. Bone Marrow Transplant is supported by a highly qualified educator and a Clinical Nurse Specialist promoting training and education from current research based resources.
Unique adjunct patient and family support is provided through our Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner, Music Therapists, Hypnotherapists and Pet Therapy program.
Phase I and II research trials are utilized for the cancer patient when appropriate. An Oncology Research Nurse directs the protocols, assuring educational opportunities for the staff and a high level of patient care and satisfaction.
